Enjoying the E220d Premium for the past 2 weeks.
But from day one, I was and still am, extremely disappointed with the standard/basic sound system.
The base is like played in the next room, behind the closed door.
I did a lot of read on the net and there doesn't seems to be an easy...er solution, apart from chucking a lot and lot of cash at it.

Is it a new car?

You'll be surprised what a decent ICE (in car entertainment) company can achieve. I spent about £500 + vat having an amp and sub fitted and the sound is now awesome!!!

Have to agree MB don't seem to fit decent ICE. Not impressed with the ICE in our E350CDI or SLC250d.
The best I have has was in my 209 CLK270CDI.

I wasn't impressed in one of my customers e220 coupe MY14 , though I guess having a Bose equipped CL does make lesser sound systems appear worse than they are

You’re spoilt now, the quality of sound system in the older S class derivs is superb.

Oh I know. Used to do ICE in my cars back in the MAX Power era..... Good old days.

But I was expecting more from E class, even in the basic form.

BTW, where do you have the sub? Any photos?

In the boot - it fold down with the split-fold seat back :)

Sweet.

I think I will have to do something like that.
But as I use the boot a lot, the only place for it would be the "spare tyre" space, as I do not have spare tyre.
Or the space on the left side, but that is probably too small.

The worst part of MB systems is the speakers, upgrade those first then decide what you need in terms of a sub. Upgraded mine to Morel with lots of sound deadening and didn't need to do anymore as the head unit was more than capable, just let down by the drive units.

I do think one of the reasons we seem to get such poor standard car sound systems in this country is the lack of inclusion in car reviews, magazines, online etc. BMW seem to be the worst for this, the basic system here isn't even avalable in the USA for instance, they get our first rung option as standard. Anyway, rant over

Is it true that with Mercedes the B&O speakers behind those fancy grills are the same speakers fitted to the standard offering? My local car stereo outfit told me that there the same, and only the amplifiers are upgraded?

I would say typically, as Larkone stated, the speakers have the greatest impact on the sound, plus the speaker enclosure behind. Even a relatively low quality amplifier will produce good sound unless you are really cranking up the dB and expecting sub 30Hz base, so I'd start with looking at better speakers. Your local ICE specialist can probably advise suitable replacements.

My W211 has the HK option, ok, nothing that special. I'm just wondering about the W213 etc.

I had the HK system with full surround sound in the GL, and it was OK. The Burmester system in both my W213s has been really good.

Merc sound systems have always been below par and as said it’s the speakers as the head units are usually top.

reminds me of my w124 with a blaupunkt head unit. Must have been top draw back in the day and the sound was just atrocious in comparison to what’s possible nowadays.

The BMW stuff is just as bad, Audi seem to have the best base systems TBH.
