Looking for some pointers for the wifes car which I'm sorry to say is a Volvo V70. I know this is a Merc site because I've had enough help on here with my rusting E class but I'm stuck offshore and don't fancy looking for a Volvo forum (weirdos). The wife reported that on her way to work the battery light came followed a couple of miles later by, and I quote "the exclamation mark, the skiddy thingy light , the speedo died and the radio stopped". She then bottled it and returned home for my W210 which will now look like a couple of Pit Bulls have had a couple of rounds in there !
I'm pretty sure we are talking about a battery or alternator problem here and after sending her back out to try again an hour ago she now says the battery light has not came on again but all the other faults are still showing.

Any good guesses ??

Hello,,how are you:D:D:D

The lamp with the throttle pedal is the engine management light,,,and can only be removed with a code reader.

I would tell her to take it to a Bosch service center, they only charge £45 per hour and they can test it all as they made the bits.

Dont you go calling me a weido,, I joined one last week:(

Hello Malcolm thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if the engine management light is actually on or not. I took it that the "skiddy thingy light " was something to do with traction control but as I'm not there and can't remember her warning lights (she has only had the car a fortnight) I'm none the wiser !

Malcolm, I've phoned home again so here's the latest - she started the car again and all was ok, she then drove the car a few hundred yards and the following lights came on ABS, Traction control disengaged, exclamation mark (I think that means brake system failure), SRS - also the speedo and radio died. The engine management light was not one which came on.
Off to bed for 5 am start tomorrow but will still be very grateful for any replies.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,, this is a speed signal fault caused through low voltage more than likely, the car is not charging, and that is the problem. Bosch centers do exchange alternators

Thanks once again Malcolm. You seem to be confirming what I already thought so hopefully it'll be an easy fix. Unfortunately she'll just leave it until I get home in about a fortnight !

You'll be needing a new battery then? My Saab did all of these things recently and I thought it was the alternator but it was just a failed battery. New battery, problem solved.

I was surprised though that it could cause all these problems and still start the car - for a while at least - then it wouldn't.
