Thermostat bypass pipe e270 CDI and c270 CDI

Can anyone tell me the reason an E270 CDI thermostat does not have a bypass pipe but a C270 CDI does?

A change in engine design.

The earlier 611/2/3 engines have one, the later (electronic turbo/ egr) 646/7/8 engines do not.

Hence the need to order the correct stat.

Thanks, didn't know that W211 engines,and only W211, were all OM647s...(though OP didn't said which model E, W210 has OM612).

Thanks for the replies.

I asked the question as a replacement bottom end from an E class 270 CDI was fitted to a C class 270 CDI 2002 (612 engine). However during assembly it was realised that the E class bottom end had no channel for the bypass pipe. The engine was fitted with the appropriate thermostat with no bypass and appears to run fine.

I was just curious if there was a particular reason for the water channel fed by the bypass pipe.
