hi , chaps , 2011 e350 cdi , there is a sensor in the top of the thermostat ..what is it for ? i have replaced the themostat and theres no way the sensor was gonna come out of the old thermostat housing , i ordered a replacement , but of course it doesnt fit , even having written to the manufacturer to ask which sensor part to order , the part was incorrect ..!! Now i cant seem to find the corre ct sensor for the thermostat that i have fittted , probably will have to start again , I assumed the sensor was for water temperature but even without one fitted ,the temp gauge works perfectly , so is the sensor to control the cooling fan perhaps ..??

Me -2019 GLC 350 coupe AMG line. Mrs- 1.2 vauxhall Corsa 2021 ,orange with a black roof. .
Should always buy genuine mb parts when it comes to water and electronics tbh. That sensor maybe talks to the maf,air con ,cooling fan , etc etc . Id be interested in learning where the dash is getting the water temp from now , ecu maybe ??

The sensor provides the engine ECU with temp data for fuelling purposes - as said fit the MB part for purpose and fit

Ask Lost Kiwi about Smart thermostats ... ;) Thermostats on some cars are a 20 minute job including a brew .... a Smart's is definitely not :D

My understanding is that it is not a sensor, it is a heating element that operates on the wax in the thermostat. It is controlled by the engine management to adjust the temperature at which the thermostat opens, depending on the driving conditions. As such, it is an integral part of the thermostat and is not replaceable separately.
