I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this, but my experience of crawling about under cars has been limited.

I've managed to source a replacement gearbox for my E250TD and am going to get a local guy here in Spain to fit it for me...when it was on the ramp for him to have a look, I noticed a round, rubber lined sort of bearing ( I don't know how else to explain it) on the prop shaft astern of the gearbox. It's not solid rubber, but a sort of daisy pattern, and some of the "petals" are broken, so it needs replacing, and I'm going to try and get one from a spares place here, but I haven't the faintest idea what to ask for!

From that rather inadequate description could anyone please tell me what it's called. I can't ask the mechanic man,' cause he's away for two weeks and I want to get the bit ready for him to fit when he gets back.

Thanks guys

As SAM above,, we tell many to change this when the car shakes when pulling or at certain speeds, and do make sure that the center bearing is good. When the engine mounts have failed or collapsed, it can throw the drive chain out of line putting more wear on these parts.-

Pleased that you found a box OK

There are two doughnuts, one at each end of the prop. It's normally the front one that breaks up

If that's worn then I'd suspect your engine mounts, gearbox mount, arb bushes, rear subframe mounts & diff mounts are all worn as well

How many miles does the car have and has it been serviced regularly by someone who knows these cars?

Thanks for the replies guys,

Nick - the car's got about 200,000Km, but I don't know the service history. When I bought it from the dealer, the service books "would be with us soon, Señor". Ho ****** Ho !

Done up like a kipper:(

Used cars ( and spares) are v. expensive here in Spain - my next Merc'll come from either the U.K. or Germany.

Anyway, now to find out the Spanish for "Hardy Spicer"......

Cheers for now

Lee
