I'm thinking of buying an old SL circa 1980.  Can anybody out there advise me with regard to things to watch out for.

I would particularly like to know views about which model to go for.  280, 350 or 500?

My wife wants to know if the hood was powered as standard?

There must be some weak points so what do I look for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

well, try and get one without those horrid ghey chrome arches, if it does have them check for rust under them...

just rust really, interior may be worn but thats no biggie...

none of the models came with a power hood, but you don't really need it - I get mine up in about three minutes ( no comments gentlemen please!) and can do it a darn sight quicker when it's raining! As Koolvin said you're biggest potential  problem is rust, though if the car has been garaged that shouldn't be a problem.

As for which model I think that's down to personal taste
although friends who have had the 280 complain it to be underpowered

I agree on RUST. Check floors in footwells, boot and hood-well.

Best model depends on how fast you want to go - but V8 maint & fuel costs would be higher than 6cyl. My 300's performance is adequate but not scary - although somewhat improved by fitting Ecoteks recently (see other threads re Ecotek).

I think there were some after-market electric hood fitments, but I agree with Joe - raising and lowering are pretty simple and quick.
