Hi everyone - the last time I posted re smoking prob s with the car, I was gonna change the heater plugs - well that done and two oil changes - I have a problem with it smoking which seems to be getting worse now. No smoke from cold - engine starts on first turn, is a bit lumpy and clankety until the oil pressure rises ( after about 5 seconds ). Once upto temperature and usually after sitting in traffic, idling, as I rev to pull away ( auto box ) I can see a plume of smoke rise up and drift away behind me - not really noticable behind on motorway for example.

Up until now it would *not* always do it. Some days not but mostly yes. Now I am getting ashamed of driving it in town :-(

My mate followed me into work by chance and when I asked him, he said the smoke looked *white* and seemed to be there all the time (under load I assume) - I have thought it to be silver Grey and even with the car ticking over there seems to be an odor of parrafin in the air. I took it to one diesel guy and after revving it about ten times while standing still the smoke lestened to nothing and he said it did not sound too bad to him....

Does this sound like injectors? Could I have worn oil control rings? I am going to take it to a local diesel injection specialist to check injectors/timimg etc.....I had previously posted regards the auto box being a bit snatchy on occasions - dunno if the smoke ( being white smoke ) may have anything to do with an auto box breather or the vaccum control gear??

Any help to put my mind at rest is appreciated - thanks

Your Mercedes
A diesel
White smoke would not normally indicate injectors, that is normally black smoke.
Check if the smoke is really white or is it blue and does it evaporate or just disperse. If it evaporates it is water vapour not smoke = head gasket.

It could be low compression one one or more cylinders, hence the lumpiness when starting. Causes: rings and bores, head gasket. Also it could be worn valve giudes and / or seals allowing oil past.

Is there any oil in the water or vice versa?

Have the compressions, timing and injectors checked and all will be revealed.
