I have been half thinking of getting a cycle for a while now so I thought I would have a laugh and price up having a tow bar fitted at the MB dealership..

In your wildest dreams can you guess how much they want??
Try £1500 !!
No you did NOT miss read and I haven't pressed the wrong key..
£1500 FIFTEEN HUNDRED POUNDS !!
I really dont know how they can keep their faces straight when quoting some of these rip off prices..

A local caravan place that fits "Towsure" towbars wants £240 all in inc electrics..
I wonder which one i shall go to ?????

I have heard a similar figure quoted ..£1200 if I remember correctly, tho in this case I seem to think it was for a BMW ...

Hi,
I wonder how much of that £1500 was parts, and how much was labour.

That price would be for a fully detachable swan neck ........... MB oem bars are made by Brink (owned by Thule) .............. you should be able to get the same bar fitted for around £450 from any good towbar fitting company, who are specialist, afterall............ a standard flangeball for £240 sounds about right to me for a 2003 chassis .... mine was just over £300 ......... new model and all that !

Never go to a main dealer for a bar ........ wrong place ........... in many ways !!

Why don't you get 2 roof rails and a cycle carrier, can't be more than £250-300 if you buy new, half that if you go ebay...

I hadnt thought of roof rails....
Just to revert to the towbar issue...
The guy that quoted me £240 (£310 detachable) said that there is an issue with reversing sensors if you fit towbars..I.e the reversing sensor goes off all the time when in reverse..
Has anyone out there got a towbar fitted and also reversing sensors?
If I have to I will have the reversing sensor disconnected.. After all a Towbar is its own reversing sensor.. You stop when you hit something..haha
On a slightly more serious note, I have noticed in the past that whenever I have had a towbar fitted people who park behind me leave quite a bit more room.

Firstly go with the towbar .....safer and easier to use, for carrying bikes (with a decent bike rack bolted through the flange) ...........

Second, you can have a small unit fitted with the electrics to get over the reverse sensor problem .. approx £35-50 the towbar fitter should know this !! (worrying)

Or you could just hit the cancel button everytime you hit revervse .and save the expense.... choice is yours

Dont have the detachable ...useless option if your gonna fit a bike rack ....you'd need an extra plate for the rack to fit the swanneck ..another £40

Questions:

1) Why would anyone want to tow a bicycle (would it not keep falling over every time you stopped)?

2) Why not buy a fold-up bicycle and put it in the boot......!!???

3) Why would ANYONE want to deface a Mercedes with a towing-hitch, anyway? Leave that sort of thing to the masses!

How true, your friend may think that you have a caravan, and then...

..... no more friends, you'll be barred from your local pub, be forced to sleep rough.

Seriously though, I have just been from Hants to Cornwall and back with roofrails/ carriers, didn't even notice they were on when driving.

I'll post a pic if you are interested?
