I have posted this on one of the other forums, but I will go into more detail here as I think it is quite important; I'm not mechanically gifted but I am stubborn. My 200te petrol stalls and is a bugger to start. Apart from that it is great,I now brake with my left foot and can stop it stalling. It sometimes doesn't stall at all. Sometimes the brake seems to ping up under my foot though. Anyway while i was reaching to clean of some spilt oil i accidentally touched ( very lightly) against one of two 4mm tubes that run up onto the top of the engine that turn 90 degrees inside rubber sleavings before going into a hexagonal top. i think it is near the thermostate. I found out that this had broken off and had probably been waiting to dislodge itself for months.
I think maybe this could be the answer to the problem. When i have some money I will replace it. My point is, if this is the answer to my problem it could answer a lot of other peoples problems as the car has had a fortune spent on it by the previous owner ( poor sod ) trying to solve this mystery.
I would like to know what this part is though but!

When you want to put the picture up, when you reply, uderneath the post icons you have additional options, then attach files. if you click the manage files it gives you the types and size of the file you can use.
Once we can see a picture of this piece some one may have a easy fix

just a thouht

 instead of the more expensive fix, try just replacing the rubber sleeve with a longer section so that it covers the broken piece and the vacum pipe, just a thought, might work.

Hi i have a 1999 400se that at the moment backfires when trying to start her.I have changed all the HT leads, the rotor arms,Distributor caps and the coil packs. This still has not cured the proplem. Before changing these the car was running ok,these where all changed one by one.I have put the old coil packs on but still the same proplem.I forgot to say the car has no petrol on board it is LPG and this is working correctley.

it is made of rubber: as i say, i just brushed past it so it must of been just waiting to go. So if the piece could be identified then this could be the problem of many a stalling merc.

Denys - this is a long shot. I had a bad missfire on my 1978 450 SLC, after having put on a new set of HT leads.

I was told to take off the metal boots at the plug end of the leads - it did the trick alright.

The bits are all conected to the vacuum from the inlet manifold. Any leaks in the pipes will affect the pressure and the engine will not idle correctly. The fuel injection works on the pressure in the manifold, if this incorrect the wrong amount of fuel will be delivered.

Some cars have an 'economy' gauge. This is in fact a vacuum gauge. If this does not travel through the full range then you have leak somewhere.

thanks a lot mr Turnipsock; I will go and buy a new one and fit it. It was a chance in a million that I discovered this and bearing in mind that this car has had all the relevent tests done on it , new mass air sensor, idle control valve......the list is endless you would have thought someone would have discovered it .....that is why I am saying this could help everyone. I am very gentle with things and i can't really even remember touching it....I just saw it hanging down there. Maybe it had a hairline crack in it or some bigfisted mechanic tried to get his hand behind it....anyway check it out if you have a problem. I will keep you posted

If you cant get one from stock, Cyanoacrylate adhisive or commonly know as instant glue in small tubes cost £1 sticks rubber better than anything else, you could take it off wash and dry it,then stick it. Not a long term solution but may do for now.

Simple vacuum tube, of which there are very many on modern cars. In my young days, there was only one! (Not counting the early epitome of design features such as Ford wipers!)

You mean the ones tom that stopped when going uphill, and that went like mad going down, still I supose it was better than spinning the knob used on the first Lucus
