Hi,
will just pass on my experience...it may help someone in the future.I have a 2.3 16v which suffered from starting problems.......flat battery after a few days standing.I did some tests and found out the battery wasn't holding a charge...after an all night charge, you could visibly watch the voltage drain out with a voltmeter. The battery was just over 1 year old, and as it was still under warranty got it exchanged.
On fitting the new battery thats when my problems started.
Firstly the ABS and ASD light stayed on all the time. After a short drive the ASD light went out....seemed to have corrected itself.....but the ABS light refused to go out!
Merc say if the light stays on it may be a voltage problem....too low...and could be a defective alternator (defective diode).
As i had a new alternator, had bought for a song on E-bay, i put that to use.Started car...lights went out as the should...thought ok.
Drove 2miles...ABS light comes on again!.Not only that, ASD lights not lighting up when ignition key in second position.
Took OVP relay out and checked out ok...cleaned terminals and put back.Took ASD relay out and cleaned terminals and put back.Started car no change.
Had a reappraisal of situation and thought back to as what i had actually done.So i took new battery out again to see if anything was amiss.
Apart from a few wires on the side of the strut panel, the only thing near the battery are the ASD relay, and under/next to that is an earth connection with 3 wires going to a bolt on the chassis.
I removed the bolt only to find the threads rusty and also a coating of rust on the area of panel under the head of the bolt!.
I cleaned the bolt/panel plus gave the terminals a clean, put back in and solved the problem.....that's all it was!.
Hope that might save someone some money in the future..... i was looking to buy new OVP and possibly a new nsf wheel sensor (£100) phew!.
all the best Ron.
