Frankly, it’s not a major issue, just inexplicable. At least, I can’t track it down but I feel sure it’s part and parcel of the original stalling problem.

To recap.

Basically, the car runs like a dream. Smooth, starts well and up to 30 mpg if driven gently.

It’s a 124 series, 300CE-24 with M104 engine, 1991. I’ve had it for 10 years and, from day one, it’s been a staller! Originally the stalling was provoked by brakes and turning at the same time, however, it was prone to stalling at the drop of a hat.

The following parts have neen replaced:

Fuel pumps
Fuel filter several times
Fuel accumulator
EHA or Guvernor
Idle Control Valve
Air filter numerous times
Over-voltage Protection Relay (twice!)
Camshaft position senser.

And probably other items I’ve forgotten.

This stalling seems now to be linked with nothing. An example:

I stopped the car and left the engine running. Removed wife’s case from boot and closed boot. I walked around to open driver’s door and, before I reached it, the engine stopped!!!

I restarted it immediately and without hesitation.

So, where do we look now?

The only other symptom is this (imagine the scenario):

Arrive home in Drive and bear to the right and stop. Move selector from Drive to Reverse. Reverse to parking position and select Park. Engine stops.

Solving this is more of an obsession than a necessity but it would be nice.

Any and all comments gratefully received.

The best to all.

not very insightful

but try the brake pedal switch. It won't do you any harm and won't mind being changed after all these years. You never know with MB and their fit-of-the-vapours electrics.

Brake switch

Hello and thanks for your interest.

Yes, I've thought of that and have a new on in stock. I'm just avoiding the contortions involved in getting under there to fix it! I think it's unlikely as the thing stalls when I'm not even in the car!

Not long ago, I wanted to measure gearbox level (engine running). Got out of the car to walk round the other side - engine stopped. I wasn't even touching it!

it could just be missing your presence

Maybe you have a bluetoooth aura about you Ray.
It will be something or nothing, but it does sound like a dry joint/intermittent contact somewhere, or a diode playing up or something similar. These things are sent to try us.

So, which one? Picture included ...

Life's seldom simple! The parts catalogue shows the TWO possibilities shown in the attached PDF.

Item 5 is marked Sender unit TDC.

Item 22 is marked Sender init position EZL.

So far, I cannot locate either in the car but I haven't had time to remove air filter (for Item22) or go underneath for Item 5.

Curious and curiouser, isn't it?

Mine is an M104 3.0 engine in a 1991 300CE-24 so does it have both?

Maybe I'll have to go to the garage and look underneath.

I'm sure I'll get there in the end.

Thanks to all.
