I recently had a puncture and following the user manual for changing the spare ,you have to screw a can of tyre weld onto the cars compresser (to seal the tyre onto the rim as its deflated in the boot) . Unfortunately the car doesnt have this in the boot.
I ended up screwing a self tapper into the hole in the tyre and pumped it up with compressor to get me to garage for puncture repair!!;) ;)
I went into Merc garage next day to enquire about this and was told it was £28 plus vat for bottle!
I had a wee look in a new Slk and it doesnt have one either ( I had assumed mine had been used by previous owner) The dealer advised me that I should just have phoned Mobillife.
I just thought it was a bit stupid that you could drive out of the Dealership and be stuck (probably in a dodgy area and have to wait for someone to repair or tow car) instead of changing it yourself and getting on with it!!
they said they would look into this as he thought it strange that the cars dont come with the tyreseal bottle to blow up spare as per manual.

Good job I had a wee self tapper from someones central heating boiler in my jacket pocket and the know how to repair the puncture temporarily
Now need to figure out whos heating has vital screw missing !!!:D ;)

My wifes Honda Accord has the 'no spare and compressor', however it does have the bottle of gloup to fix the leak. However I have heard that if you use this stuff tyre places won't fix the puncture. Anyone else heard that?
I found two punctures in the rear wheels last weekend, I just pumped therm up and drove to my tyre dealer, although my wife is now asking for a spare wheel.

Your wife is wise asking for a spare! A space-saver is far better than the 'gloup' approach.

My last car was an Accord Tourer and following a puncture, used the provided can of gunge and compressor, intending to drive as far as the nearest tyre dealer.

The tyre stayed inflated for less than 15 minutes! OK, so the tyre damage must have been too severe for the gunge to work. I called QuikFit mobile and they arrived 2 hours later. The worst part was the state the inside of the alloy was in - it took the guy ages to clean the cr@p out before he fitted the new tyre. He and his van were covered too, so I do not find it surprising that some places refuse to fix tyres that have been 'glouped'.

I was told by our local A.T.S. tyre Depot that if a customer used the Tyre Weld to repair a puncture, they would not deal with that tyre and would only fit a new tyre on the rim after they had cleaned it at your cost at £45-00 per hour. Takes at least an hour sometimes more to clean a wheel depending if it is steel or alloy.

The gloop idea is just plain pointless. It's fine for nails etc but for other tyre damage it's not going to work. My mum's smart is supposed to have gloop pre-installed and no spare. On 3 occasions now, she's damaged a tyre, put a hole in the sidewall and consequently overhwelmed the gloop and had a flat.
On the last occasion a couple of weeks ago she hit a pot hole and did the front tyre in. Fortunatley, after the last 2 tow-away occasions, my dad had bought a new alloy with tyre and 'obtained' a jack from the dealer, all stashed behind the seats, so we were able to swap the wheel and she was on her way.
Give me a spare wheel anyday.

The glop is not to repair the puncture!!!!
It is for use when blowing up the spare( Its deflated in the boot) and is used to seal the tyre onto the rim when inflating it b4 putting on the car!!!
But the car doesnt come with it which I find incredibly strange!!
Does this also mean you can only use the spare once !!!?????
Need a definitive answer on this as My local Dealer didnt know either!!
(Merc Dealer that is);) :D ;)

It is on some cars! Sorry the thread went off topic a little - but I was not the first to bring up the Honda Accord (which does use the 'glop' to 'fix' punctures - and is cr@p at it).

Yes it does - or rather once per tin (another reason why the Accord system is sh!te). You have to use the whole can each time you need to inflate the spare. It should say that on the tin (if you had one!).

In a desperate attempt to get back on topic, I too find it surprising that you don't get a can with the car. The deflated spare is useless without it.

I know my wifes 206CC had a wee aerosol that inflated the car tyre and repaired the puncture but this stuff is different and Merc dont supply it with new vehicles!!!
They did try to punt me the green goo that they put in your tyres for £70 per corner saying that I would never have a puncture again but i pointed out it only works up to 5mm holes so a bit of a waste!!

My last word on Honda (promise). I'm pretty sure that the Accord uses the same stuff that the deflated spare uses - it looks the same anyway. The stuff you are talking about also inflates the spare; but the Accord (like Merc) comes with a battery compressor too. Unlike Merc, the Accord (or the ones with big tyres) come with NO spare, so you have to use the 'glop' on the flat tyre. I suppose (if it worked) there is a small advantage in that the faulty tyre stays on the car - no jacking required.... But that is if it worked!

Perhaps the real answer is to go back to solid tyres. :)

And for good reasons, however I would not get it from the dealer. I would seek out an local agent and get them to do it.

Or

You can carry on getting punctures! The choice is yours.

wow £280 a car - i have it in all my cars except the Merc as it is not supposed to work properly in ultra low profile tyres. Seems to be good AND you can do a DIY job. My mate sells it and also installs it at your home or work or ??? Unlike fix a flat it is water soluble and you can wash it out should you get a big hole in the tyre and need it fixed on a permanant basis by a tyre company. He sells bottles for £25 (two needed per car - dependent on tyre size of course) - and He installs it for £70 a car - not a wheel - Glasgow and surrounding area only.

Anyone else confirm this?

I have the Merc gloopy stuff in my boot along with a little compressor, but no spare at all.

I don't fancy a puncture in the pouring rain and having to go through that hassle.

Very different sized wheels F & R which I suppose is the reason for no spare.

It would be nice to know that Ultraseal would work in them (265 35 18 Rears & 245 40 18 Fronts)

I refer the honourable member the post I made earlier. The link is to the manufacturer and I'm sure they could confirm or deny.

I see the US Navy use it. I thought they had Boats?

Cheers, did have a root around the site, though no specifications/sizes were given.

Sent them an email now, though I'd assume they'll say yes it'll be fine.

Re US Navy.....dinghys????:D
