Ok guys this is the last problem with my E200 (1998) after buying the car a was unhappy with the feel of the throttle pedal I removed the cover next to the throttle body, which uncovered a very complecated linkage most likely due to the fact the car is a auto. What i did notice was a lot of movement was required to take up slack in the linkage before the throttle was opened the slack was mainly due to the shape of a ark in the linkage it seamed to be worn. Again due to my lack of experance with mercs i'm unsure if this is normal or not. So i adjusted the cable to remove the slack the car now drives better but sometimes makes strange gear changes. I have pined out the ECU and the throttle switch is working correctly.. But sometimes when driving along I think it's never going to change up.

Thanks for any help Neil.

The pedal ass; also contains the kick down so what you have done has left the car in the near kick down state for normal driving and you would have been better off doing any adjustment on the engine end of the fly by wire

Im not sure if this applies to your car but an my 124 2.5D there was a fair amount of slack in the throttle links at the sloted arc shaped plate bit, this affected the gear change.

To adjust the gearbox cable you take all the slack out of its control cable and its supposed to be OK, but if there is wear in the throttle linkage the travel of the gear box control is in front of the throttle and so mine was adjusted for no slack at the point on the accelerator cable travel (a small movement of the pedal cable) that started to open the throttle lever on the fuel pump this improved my gear change no end.
Maybe a similar method could make your adjustment better.

The arc shaped plate makes the throttle motion non linear, it takes most of the pedal travel to only partialy open the throttle. This gives a better feel to the car.
