hello guys

over the last few days when slowing down my car has been making a noise that i would have said was a miss fire.
its got worse and worse and now it sounded like my engine was a subru impretza engine
then the final stage was sounding like sledge hammers being banged on the back of my car, i think the read handbreak shoes have collopsed, it felt like the breaks were locked on and when driving was banging in the garage now

has anyone heard of this happening before? or any idea on how much its going to cost me, its at a none merc garage so hopefully it wont mean taking out a loan or anything

thanks

its a e220 2004 100,000 miles
the garage have called and said it was the handbreak clips or something in one side behind the drum
unfortunatly i picked a garage that doesnt work saturday so no car until monday now ..........bummer
i am not sure if this is a common fault, could the heavy snow yesterday and driving in it all day have caused it??
thanks for your reply sam

Your Mercedes
nice 201 2.5D 1993 & very nice 129 SL500 1994
If the "handbrake clips" are the shoe retainers these are the components that take a smack first if alloy wheel bolts (longer) are used on a steel spare.

Perhaps this has happened to yours and the problem was found (wheel won't go round) before it was driven. If you drive one with the wrong (too long) bolts it breaks all the hand brake bits and could make it very difficult to remove the wheel bolts.

That was the 1st thing the mechanic asked if i had had a puncture but i have never changed the wheel bolts but correct apparently that is the main cause of people smashing the rear shoes, i had no idea and its a good thing to know
if anyones interested my diff was broken due to no oil in it should hold 2 litres but mine was bone dry, now they said change it every 100,000 miles but merc dont say you have to but i think i will in the future
