ticking noise + excessive smoke linked...

My 2001 S320 cdi has a ticking noise between 1500 and 2000rpm that is only apparent when the engine is hot.

Also the car plooms out smoke under harsh acceleration.

I have been told by an independant Mercedes specialist that the link between the motor and valves on the manifold (metal rod) may have become disconnected and so the valves remain in the open position causing the excessive smoke and rattling noise...

Do I need a new manifold or can i buy a kit that replaces the rod etc...

If your talking about the inport shut off motor and linkage then yes new inlet manifold needed,
no repair kit on the market!!

I would also check that the EGR valve is operating properly, these do seize up and cause plumes of smoke ...

Hi Guys
Newbie here, sorry to but in, I'm having the same problem on my Sclass
with regard smoke & ticking but all the link connectors on the manifold seem fine and in working order is the EGR vale located in the manifold.??. Also getting a build up of thick black oil gunge around the bottom of the Inter-cooler pipes?? Happy Dayz!! Any help info or direction would be appreciated. Cheers

i too also have the same my valves sound tapperty and i get cloumes of smoke too down on power a bit

right update on this valve mine was disconected reconeted it now i have no power no kick down but the smokeing has gone i am thinking if this has being not working for a while has it got carboned up ?? and the acuator not doing its job any help

well ok update the motor on mine is i think is fubared i am haveing the manifold removed in 2 weeks time the valves are moveing on the manifold but tight so when off a decoke will sort these out and egr valve to be clean but it not make a ticking noise though the shut off valve we are on about is only for econemy driveing it opens when you need power then closes when not you may have a problem like i do one on my injectors is blowing back that can be the ticking or a tappet may be the problem if the bar is off does the valve move on the manifold it shold move to the right for open and center for closed i reconected mine but the vale never opend so manifold off and cleaning or if you want msn me at johnriley973@msn.com
