Hello, my c200k 51 plate just started to make a sound like a stone in the tyre. according to my wife it only sounds when she drives ,not stationary, but she says it seems like its inside. ? It speeds up accordingly, then maybe coincidently about 10 miles after the noise started the brakepad worn lining malfunction message came on the computer. I also had some new wheels and bolts fitted about 2k ago. Any ideas, I need to get it fixed with least expense as I am in the middle of selling it. Many thanks Paul

If the wheel bolts are incorrect on the rear, they can just touch the rear brakes, there have been quite a few threads on this, People normally grind 2mm off the end of the bolts.

The new wheels have been on for about 2k now and only started today. Since my last post I have now listened to the car and it is more of a rubbing/scraping noise, sound like the front, have taken both front wheels off and the brakes sound like they are rubbing.

It is possible to get a small stone stuck in the pad surface, so it will be whhels off to see, double check the warning lamp wires when you are at it, there have been cases where the wire has been rubbing, and worn through putting on the lamp.

Sounds like the pads are "picking up" on the Disks. Wheels off, pads out, clean up pads and around the calipers, copperslip back off pads and reassemble. It will undoubtablty be the fronts causing the problem.

I had a R*ver that used to be really bad for this....

Heres a long shot, if other suggestions fail:

Had same on standard wheels & merc dealer sent out a mechanic with me for an hour trying to assess problem & which wheel was playing the noise.
Got it back in workshop & swopped with spare wheel & noise dissapeared!

Took tyre back to tyre dealers & got it replaced FOC after 2-4k mls on new set of 4 "Semperit" budget tyres, & tyre dealer also confirmed that this happens on cheap to expensive top line marque tyres as well & if not more so.

MB dealer mechanic guessed right that it was a faulty tyre all along, & he also said it can happen to any make n quality is immaterial.

Best thing of all was that MB Gatwick dealer said NO CHARGE - HAPPY TO HELP A REGULAR CUSTOMER but that was back in 1995.

Keith.
