I would go for the plugs first, when I changed mine, it made a huge difference to the smoothness, but soon after I had to change the MAF, ( it comes to all of us!)
MPG is a tough one, it depends on your driving style, but, I reckon I get about 30 day to day driving ( I dont live in a town!) and mid 30`s on a motorway.
I drove down to ( and around ) South of France and Spain last year, over 2000 miles in 2 weeks, I averaged about 37mpg, 4 up with loads of luggage and a roofbox.

( 405 mi-16 eh? I drove a couple of those around for a few weeks a while ago, great cars!)

Hi im from west yorkshire myself, now working on Mercedes in China. Start with the basics on this, there are three common causes. 1. Spark plugs, 2, MAF sensor, 3, Fuel regulator. 1 and 3 are easy to check and 2 is a last resort and better checked using Star Diagnostics ( as this part is a little more expensive). Personaly I would check the fuel regulator first, the reason, its the easiest to check. any further questions, please post them.
