I’ve had my SLK320 for over 20 years now and although it’s always garaged I’d really like to get the underneath tidied up. Obviously some of the powder coating has long since gone on the suspension arms etc but does anyone know of a place that will clean it carefully, removing any loose paint or rust and then apply a nice wax coating (bit like waxoyl) so that it stops any deterioration? I live near Newark.

I know one of the indies on here does it, a very thorough job. I can't remeber which one though, someone will be along soon with better memory than me :)

Not that I have any experience of it, but dry ice blasting seems to becoming a thing. There is an amazing You Tube of the undercarriage of an MB in the States being done, resulting in a factory fresh finish. There seems to be a few companies offering dry ice cleaning in the UK according to Google. Interesting even if you don't want to go that far.

Yeah that’s what got me asking! I saw some pictures of a before and after. Was on an SLK in Germany. Looks amazing.

Around us I can’t think of anyone that would do this sort of thing, I’d think maybe one of the restorers might do something but it’s really going to be a case of how much you want to spend

I’m hoping less than 400 quid. It’s worth that to have it done properly. If not then I suppose a wire brush, an airline, and a couple of 5 litre cans of Waxoyl will be the choice.

I have seen a company that does it using a product called Dinitrol, if you do some googling it should come up

Aha, that’s the name I was trying to remember. That was popular back in the 70’s when everything rusted away as quick as you could drive it from the garage, I just couldn’t remember the name. Thanks I’ll have a nose.

I always have a can handy for squirting on any rust I see underneath . I also spray the rear subframe inside and out every couple of years . It seems like good stuff from my DIY’ing perspective

I bought cans of Waxoyl but I’m so ****** arthritic I can’t easily move about any more to do it myself! I could probably do with a liberal coating of the stuff!

The problem with waxoyl type products is that they can just encapsulate and disguise and hide rust, but short of stripping out the underside of your car there's not much of an alternative.

Yeah, that’s why I’d rather have it blasted with something that’ll shift all the loose bits and expose anything that may rust
