I have been told that toyota has a timing belt indicator in dashboard that indicates if the timing belt is damaged or needing replacement. Is it true ?!?

Why would merc or BMW not have it then... i would assume it would be very handy to have it in a car!!!

i am led to belive that Mercs still use timing chains so i dont suppose it would be of much use. Am not sure how many Toyotas, Bmw's and Mercs suffer with troubles with these items.

still, someone will know better than me.

As Slinkyjoe says we have chains that go at least double the time of any belts, coupled with that our car's are so quiet, any rattle, rattles the driver into having it fixed.

Hi. My info isn't much up to date but years ago I had a toyota hiace pick up (x reg, so 1982 ??). At 50,000 miles the timing belt light came on. I changed the belt in due course but didn't reset the light. A while later, however, when the vehicle turned 100,000 miles the light went back out. The same happened to another newer style hiace van a friend owned. I wonder what would have happened had I kept the van til 150,000.

hmm, how can i be sure of what rattle i'm hearing,

Malcolm, with your years of experience can you tell me in general at what mileage should someone consider changing the timing chain ? my mum didnt do it on her merc 200 and it snapped necessitating an engine replacement,

i don't want that to happen to me :(

cheers

Hi Anyweb, I think your mums 200 had a simplex chain, they could and did break when not attended to, you have a duplex (double) chain, and to my knowledge one of these has never broken. If you open the bonnet and start the car you can hear the rattle when it is wearing, that last for a few secconds. It is possible that your has been replaced.
Why not start a new thread asking for the highest milage out of the chain.

Malcolm.

will get your Tcut in a couple of days.
