Hi

as suggested if this timing chain needs replacing does it make an obvious noise on idle and when driving? i.e. should the noise still be there when you put the throttle down? or should it remain just at idle

Also how much am a i looking at for a timing chain change with tensioner approx?

TIA

Worn timing chains show up more on start up, eventually noisy on idle. the noise that you hear is the slack in the left hand side. this must not be cofused with valve gear.
The baest way if you are not experianced, is to put an object like a large wooden handled screwdriver onto the left hand side of the timing cover where if worn you will hear a constant chain noise, higher in the engine on the rocker cover you can hear the valve gear running, this is more of a tapping sound. You cant normally hear it when pulling unless it is very bad, I have known them to wear a hole in the timing cover. Why not get a seconf opinion

I totally agree with Malcolm. Could be a lazy valve lifter rattling.

Thanks malcolm thats excllent advice, my worry is that ive confined the noise(more rattling than tapping) to being the drivebelt/waterpump and/or pulley tensioner but I feel this sound could be the timing chain car is over 110k miles, I will get it checked early next week.

IF it does turn out to be the chain, is this costly to do? and more important is it a difficult task?

Thanks again

i had similar noise recently it turned out to be a worn fanbelt pulley and pulley shock absorber [ on a 2000 c200 w202 ]

Check it out as this good man says, once the belt is off everything in the chain should turn smoothly with no lumps, there has been a bout of waterpumps breaking up of late.

Malcolm

your milage is too low to be a chain I think

Most likely the shock absorber on the tensioner.Try prying it with a screwdriver and see if the note changes.Cheap £15 DIY if replacemrnt needed.
C180 duplex timing chains last forever.

Had a Dolomite Sprint and the timing chains on those needed replacing every 25K or so. When worn badly the duplex chains sounded like the household cavalry after start-up for a mile or so until warm. Eventually the symptoms were there continually, even when warm, which mean't a change was required.

If the timing chain is the problem, make sure you change the chain and sprocket or you will only solve half the problem.
