I have read different info about this, some say it's not needed to change it because it's made well and should last the lifetime of the car , others say at a certain mileage it should be changed.. does anyone know what the actual truth about it is ? Should it be changed at a certain point ?

I can’t think of anyone on the forum having to changing the timing chain and sprockets on an OM642.

I guess this answers your question - it may have happened it’s quite rare

It’s not something I have come across for this engine (and I have 2 cars with that engine), as being a concern or an item to bear in mind.

We have had to do a few rattlely chains on the 642 Euro 5 engine (300/350 variants). They have moved over to a single link chain and yes, they stretch. Straight forward to do though.
So are you speaking of the w212 ? Would there be signs that the chain needs changing ?

I am. Dont panic, there are millions on the road and we have probably done about 10 in the last year.

A rattle on start is usually the symptom but we did have one with a cam position fault and EML too.
