Anyone know where I can get the part number for the timing chain for my SL? I was given the number by my local MB dealer, ordered it from Germany and it turns out to be a bit short....approx 90 links too short. Pt No. 0009977594. He still says this is the correct part number for the engine number(116engine) I gave him.
Any suggestions
Thanks

That part no. seems to be for the later light weight 380 and 420 m116.

The car mike has, has a 3.5 iron block simmilar to the 4.5 m117 engine. This M116 3.5 was what the M117 4.5 (US) was derived from.

Is it possible that the chain was the same on both: 0009977694, and not the 0009977594 one as fitted the alloy block 380SL

Pascal

BTW The Euro 3.5 is almost as powerful as the US 4.5.

Thanks for the help guys, very strange that the chain I got is about half the length it should be. Must be a very small V8, are all 116 engines v8s? Not sure where to go from here. Keep researching I suppose.
Missed all the good weather over this, typical. Suppose its better than a slipped or snaped chain.
Thanks
Mike

As I said above the 3.5 & 4.5 are related engine and considered 'big block'

The engine you have; is it M116.98* (1, 2, 3, or 4)?
The 4.5 is almost the same (M117.98*), and is closely related to the 3.5 (M116.98*), but different to below:

The later (late 70s) M116 alloy engines were:

380 (M116.681)
420 (M116.685)
500 (M116.683)

All V8

The 6 cyl engines of that time were M110 series

So all 116s are V8s Pascal, its a very short chain I have got,to pass up around two camshafts from the crankshaft gear. My engine Number is
116.982-22-005328, if this helps identify the correct chain.
Thanks for the help.

Pascal ,I think the chain I recieved has got about 90something links(as my brother counted em) The chain should have 180something links. God this sounds daft, I will have to count em again but Im not far out(I think)

Thanks very much for your efforts Pascal, I just counted the links on the chain I got from Germany and its 93links. Counted the chain on the engine last saterday with my brother, I cranked her over by hand while he counted the links, Im sure he came up with 0ne eighty six or something close. Its written on the Haynes manual but it seems I have misplaced that, it cant get much worse.Thats the part number on the box I recieved which has only 93 links. Its also the number quoted by my local MB dealer.
What do I have to do?, order another one and join em up to make up 186?
Strange how this has happened cos it was sealed up in an MB box, holograms n all.
Will contact this chap in germany in the morning and try n sort it out.
Thanks again
Mike

Mike,

That part # has 186 links. It seems obvious to me that the wrong part was put in the box at source.

Even the 4cyl and 6cyl have over 120-140 links.

Is yours double link or the old single?

Now I feel reeeeally STUPID:mrgreen: . I left the initial count of the new and old chain down to my brother;-) . He counted the side plates on the new chain, as I also did and when I turned the engine over he counted holes in the chain where the sprocket teeth stick through.Twice as many holes as plates, obviously, but not to us unfortunately:-? .It took the very helpful chap from germany to point this out. I counted them myself tonite, then the sick feeling started sinking in.I blame my brother as I do myself, it must be in the blood.
Didnt really want to post this reply, but I felt I had to, if only not to confuse people further.
Thanks everybody for this wild goose chase and feel free to wind me..er us up:mrgreen: .
Sorry
Mike
