Hi,
I have a w reg(2000) c200 elegance. Timing chain is starting to rattle quite badly when idling.
The question is, does my car have a tensioner that can be adjusted and prevent the timing chain having to be replaced?
If the chain has to be replaced does anyone know how much an indy would charge?
many thanks

Are you sure that it is the chain, they rattle at start up only as the are hydraulically controlled.

Most rattling comes from the idler wheel and the tensioner

Will my model c200 (w202) definately have a tensioner I was told some earlier models dont have them they only have the chain?
Can these be adjusted or do you replace them?

All chains must have a hydraulic tensioner, they self adjust to take up any slack in the chain.

When the chain is worn, it may rattle a little till the oil pressure takes up any slack,, but they do not rattle at normal speed,,though in bad cases they may at idle if the oil pressure is low.

It is the belt tensioner that normally makes the noise.

What is the mileage of the car

thanks for yor help television, the milage is approx 180000. Does there come a stage where the tensioner wont self adjust any further and you have to replace the chain or do you replace the tensioner as a first option.
thanks

OK thats gone the max and to the point of breaking through wear.

No the tensioner will not help.

One can fit a new timing chain by joining the new one onto the old one and feed it through, this is the MB way.

Its best to fit a new tensioner with a new chain.

I may have a paper on doing this

Are you sure it's not the camshaft adjuster on the end of the inlet cam, under the plastic cover. You could try unplugging the electrical connector and see if it goes away.

ETA -Oh, just noticed the mileage... could be the chain.

I've never changed a duplex chain on a Merc for noise. Plenty of simplex, obviously. Dependent on service history, 180k could go either way.

My best mate has a BMW (yeeuuuccckkk) 730i four cam V8, which has 298000 miles on the clock. We had the cam covers off recently and the chain is so stretched that you couldn't get a fag paper between the vertical runs of the chain, but it is as quiet as a mouse. Nickasil liners are an entirely different story.....

Worth pulling the cam adjuster plug off just to check, imo.....

On the front of the engine there is a plastic cover that continues the shape of the cam cover. It will lift off if you place your fingers under the middle and pull out slightly and up, rotating it clockwise as you look at it. Under there you will see a raised circular object with an electrical plug and wires attached. 68 in the pic.
