my 1994 c200 152.000 mile had a rattle from the front and now it wont start even though it still sparks.
someone looked in the rocker case and said the chain is the problem
because when cranked the rockers are not moving. is this correct and can it
be repaired and will it be expensive

thanks in advance

Sounds like the timing chain has snapped, I woudnt crank the engine either as the valves will hit the pistons.

If no damage to the valves or piston then a new timing chain can be fitted,it just means taking off the timing cover and fitting a new one. If the sprockets have sharp teeth they should be replaced at the same time

Take car on this as someone who has done a few could do it quicker and better, there are a few quirks that are handy to know

Has the garage done any recent work on the car to try and stop/reduce the noise you were getting?

I ask, because they may have taken out the chain tensioner and re inserted it incorrectly and caused the camshaft to snap in half at the timing gear end.

There is a special sequence for inserting the Merc tensioner which a lot of garages do not know about - you need to ensure the only people that work on the car know this in advance and have done it previously.
