Tiptronic info

I know nothing about cars especially Tiptronic. When I went to my dealer to look a buying 2000(W) E430 estate they said it has a tiptronic gearbox. When I enquired if it needed the £700.00 service at 60K miles they said no becuase it does not have gears/oil it is purely electronic. This sounds rather fanciful to me so I am trying to find out the technology behind Tiptronic to no avail. can anyone recomend a web site or supply an over view to me.

Tiptronic is pretty much the same but the gear changes can be controlled electronically. There is a bit of a debate about this, MB say you shouldnt change the oil whereas almostr everyone else thinks that its probably best to ensure a good life of your box. Most specialists will change the oil for you.

MB actually supply gearbox oil for the later electronic boxes in their parts dept!

MB supply oil in there parts dept for these boxes because if they have a leak they need to be topped up, This gearbox is virtualy the same as the early electronic box the tiptronic side is only an improvement in control of the box. The reason the boxes are not serviced are :-

IMPROVED MODEN OILS
CONTAMINATION DURING OIL CHANGES CAUSES FAULTS
INCORRECT OIL LEVELS DURING OIL CHANGE CAUSES FAULTS

If MB thought these boxes would benifit from an oil change don't you think they would be please to take your money

If it makes you feel better ask MB to change the oil cost :-

1/2 hour labour
5-7 litres oil
1 filter

Total 140 quid

BUT THEY DON'T NEED ANOIL CHANGE
