My recently acquired 96' C280 sport shows the front wheels as needing a 225/45R17 Y 91 and the rear wheels a 245/50R17 Y 91 (on AMG alloys).

At the moment the car is actually riding on four of the same size 225/45's...

They need replacing - so is it OK to go with the same size tires or should I go with the recommended bigger rears?

Thanks again,
MikeE

Are you sure you have that correct? Normally as the tyre gets wider (225 to 245) the section goes down i.e. 45 to 40. This is to maintain the same rolling diameter

If you trully have a staggered set-up (the rear rims will be wider) then you should go with the wider rear tyres i.e. 225/45/17 front on 7" rims and 245/40/17 rear on 7.5" rims

I'm not sure where I got those specs from, perhaps somewhere in internet land before I discovered this site, methinks...

I assumed the different tire sizes where due to it being rear wheel drive(?).

Four 225's sound good to me as far as my wallet is concerned - LOL
