souns like something not as it should be in a suspension component, this could be working (against you) in concert with tired brakes but the clonk sugests worn bushes or ball joint in the suspension.

Distorted disks usualy feed back through the brake pedal especialy under light brake application.

WHAT MODEL IS IT, and if its dodgy should your wife or anybody else be driving it?

I think the first step is as wireman says, check the steering components

Certainly not a warped disc, but any MOT station could test the efficiency of the front brakes individually.

An easy test is to jack one side of the car and try shaking / rocking the wheel, do the same on both sides and at the same time look at the bottom swivel and track rods ends for any movement

You can run your hand across the tyre to feel for any feathering that would indicate tracking. Feathering is on onw side of the tread pattern there is a raised thin lip on one side of the tread and not on the other
