I am the owner of a 1990 190E 2.0 auto. My first merc and i love it. In september I had it serviced. Before the service, i was getting around 360 miles out of a tank of fuel. This pleased me. Now Im getting 230 -ish! this does not please me. Many attempts by many garages to solve the problem have ended in failure. They have tinkered with fuel and air mixture, replaced a missing spring keeping the throttle linkage to the overrun switch. all to no avail. The latest trip to the garage was to replace the thermostat as the engine was not getting hot. No journey big or small would see the engine get above 65 degrees. Im hoping this latest repair will improve my fuel consumption. But im desperate guys! I Love my merc. Does anyone have any clues??

Ken.

90 to 100c is the optmum temperture for running, on an E car the enrichemt could be partly on at 65c

Is your engine still not getting up to temp?

If it's still not I'm pretty sure that is your problem (as Malcolm has pointed out); the motor is still running in 'cold start' mode and is thus using an over-rich mixture. Does it smell quite petroly? (is that a word? :))

Check the fuel pressure, if it's too high (say your pressure regulator is buggered) you'll get increased consumption, but very few other symptoms.

Big bit of cardboard in fornt of the radiator will help with the running temperature (winter only!)

new thermostat seems to be working better than before, however temp sitting just over 80 degrees. This from wot you guys say is still too cold. Why wont the engine heat up? I dont want to resort to cardboard and i dont really think its been below zero more than once or twice. So i check the plug tips, wot am i looking for?

Cheers

Most 190s run at around 80-85c Some people frown at a piece of cardboard I did that with my 124 and left it there most of the year round, it gave me a quick warm up, and you have the guage. Even in summer and traffic jams it never over heated.
Most of the 190s and 123s in Sweden had radiator blinds that you could open and close within the car.

I agree with Malcolm, my 190 ran at a shade over 80c, I once saw it hit 90c, but only when I was stuck in traffic after caning it for a long way on a hot day.
