After some deliberation I took the plunge at the weekend and bought a 1998 C280 V6 in black. It's done a massive 130k miles but with full MB service history, 2 owners and a glowing RAC check I felt pretty confident.

So far I am delighted. It's in SPORT trim and the power delivery is effortless and really smooth. Only complaint is slight jiggly ride on B roads but this is a fair price to pay for almost zero body roll.

You really wouldn't know that it had done the mileage. Plus it's got black leather, climate and a sunroof etc etc.

It seems it was imported from Belgium but I still think this must have been over £30k 4 years ago when new - if anyone has the original price lists from 1998 I'd be very interested!

One small question. The remote "plipper" works fine but the slide out key doesn't work the locks. I assume this means the locks have been changed at some point? Any ideas? can I get replacement "slide out" keys or shouldn't I worry too much?

Gren,

Congratualtions on the purchase, a wise choice i have to say! Im sure one of the others will comment on the key issue, but as for the mileage, 130k is just past the running in period for a merc engine, especially a powerful one like yours, so you can feel at ease about it!

cheers

I had the same problem when I purchased my current car, turned out previous owner had never used key so lock was seized, several applications of WD40 over time eventually freed locks, maybe this is your problem ?
Try both doors but dont force key. I would have thought a change of locks would be noted if it has FMBSH!

Brilliant car, IMHO. I ran a Tourmaline Green C280 Sport for 3 years, sounds identical, black leather, climate and roof.
Never tried the slide out key, sorry.
If you ever decide to upgrade the music, you should definitely check out the Pioneer speakers custom made for the W202 - I had them in my car with a Pioneer H/u and they are awesome.
Check out this thread - here - for pics.
Enjoy your new motor!
Edit -
You will find the link does not work. It was a link to some pics on another site, but the Moderators here have set this site up so that part of the URL is automatically replaced by asterisks!
If you can figure out where it is, look under Speakers.

Any idea of list price?
