not sure whether this should rightly be in the electrics/vacuum etc section, but here goes:

on a drive early today (empty roads, bliss!) i somehow lost top gear (5th) ; and at the same time, the tempomat (cruise control) stopped functioning.

stopped at destination for an hour or so, started up again and all was as should be. top gear returned, cc returned. i understand that the final gear on my E280 is "electronically controlled" ... apparently unlike the other four gears. i'm guessing that this means it's some sort of electrically actuated overdrive, as in many other gearboxes ... but i've no idea as to the specifics.

anyone any idea as to what may have caused this dual fault, or what component i should be investigating? many thanks for all pointers/tips, and all the best for 2006!!

Gear boxes do funny things when its cold, you could get a fault code readout anywhere.
If it shows 9 its a solinoid coil control valve, not too bad to change and the only listed fault

hm, not sure what you mean TV ... car lost top gear when fully warmed up, not cold. in fact it had just been for a sustained blast at 120+mph. however like you say it looks like an electrical glitch of some kind, and it might be wise to get a fault code readout. wish i wasn't so busy (or had a code reader of my own!)

One day soon I will put up details of how to make a code reader, cost under £3.00. In your thread I mean if the fault code read out 9 then it could be the solinoid control valve, this fault can be very intermitent and may never happen again.

I'd be very interested in those details, much better than paying Ebay £25 for one.
