Top gear

When/what speed should the car go into top 7th gear? e250d 2014

Depending on temperatures, usually between 60 and 70 mph.

So if I were driving at our regular speed of around 60, would it be ok if car was only in 6th? Surly it would be more economical if in top gear.

Hello and welcome

Depends upon a few variables - temperature being one of them (it will hold lower gears to get to temp - what is your engine temp?)
Driving mode - S will hold gears C will change up earlier
Throttle position, steady or coasting likely to be in top
Uphill, downhill or level travel - uphill can stay in lower gear
You can knock the flappy paddles (if you have them) to get into top earlier. Alternatively you can tap the gear-lever to the right to get it up the box.

I often tap the downshift to keep rpm up a bit . Today's traffic situation means its often doing no rpm in top better to loose a few mpg than labour motor. In my view and keep flow thru muffler up. My theory anyway.

Thanks, up to now I've only been out on the test drive.
However I noticed that it was only in 6 gear and never got to 7.
I Don't pick car up until Thursday as getting PDI inspection at main dealers.
I'm new to car so expect I will have to learn about how the gears work.

What does it show in the display ?

I will post more details after I drive it back from Leeds on Thursday, will be on motorway for most of the way.

Taking your foot off the ' gas ' pedal a little can make it drop into the next gear.

Just drive it! Don’t overthink it.

I used to regularly use the paddle to knock mine into 9th when I was gently cruising. It seemed happy to stay there unless I added more pressure to the throttle or started up an incline.

Same with my W213, it would stay in 9th at 68 in manual mode but didn’t always change up in auto

Some days I use cruise control at 60 mph . I notice it's gone into 9th by itself. Yet other days it's in 8th and I'm doing the driving. Gearbox and engine temperatures definitely have an effect .

Headwind & tailwinds make a big difference.

My SL will stay in 9th (on a flat road) at about 40 no problems.

V6 3.0 vs IL4 2.0 in cars that weigh similar (SL is 15Kg heavier... but probably more aerodynamic ) so more likely to hold top

Thank you for all the replies, I decided not to buy that particular car, I thought it had a vibrating when accelerating.
I am not disappointed however as I have now bought a E300 instead.
Looking forward to picking it up Friday.

Petrol is the way forward. Tbh.
