drain plug should be a small hex socketed bolt. turn torque converter by means of crank pulley til it appears in the 'window' in the bell housing. it's better to have someone turn the crank for you, in my opinion - if you do it and turn slightly too much, the drain plug will go by the hole (without you knowing)

Same as flagstaff, the drain plug will go by in a flash, so it's really easy to miss.

I turned over the engine with a screwdriver jammed across the bolt-heads of the Powrer Steering pump. I recon about 20degree increments is the maximum with this method, or you'll miss the plug.

I did this disgusting job this weekend, so I'm now surrounded in a santiumonius glow, knowing that the transmission will last forever now....

The sump was COMPLETELY clean, and I know for a fact that it hasn't been changed in at least 30,000 miles, maybe never.

I changed the filter anyway, because I'd bought one, but I recon it wasn't doing anything.

Next time I'll just change the fluid, that way the pan doesn't have to come off.

The replies are correct. On my 230E 1992 the drain plug moves quickly past the gearbox outer'cage'. Last time my I got it close and my wife moved it just the few degrees to get it perfectly vertical. Then mark the front engine pulley with Tipex at 6 o/clock for next time. I think it is a 7mm allan key. Get a high quality key, as burring it off will be very expensive. The job is difficult, but rewarding as you can get about 2/3 litres out of the torque converter. Most automatics only allow about 70% of the oil to drain. Converters stay full and mix with clean oil. OK, but better to have a full drain. I follow the Haynes advice. Drain and filter change every 36,000 miles, and drain every 18,000, as I do lots of stop/start motoring. Even then the oil is going a little brown. Europarts last did the gearbox filter and the big rubber sump seal for £13.38p, about half MB price. I use Commer oil, and its fine. Remember oil plus filter = £22. New gearbox = £2000. I am on 102,000 miles with a silky gearbox.
