My w202 gets a slight steering wander when the autobox changes gear. Would this be the torque\drag links at the back? Any idea's?

Steering damper?

Jack the car up (be careful) and move the wheel(s) side to side and see if there is any play.

Also it could be your subframe mounts at the back are worn. With a wheel removed they are easy to see for inspection.

I had the car up on a lift while doing some other work and had a general peep around. Checked for play in the front wheels and found no play in the steering system. Is there a more detailed way to check steering the damper?

Yes. Unbolt one end of it and push it back and forth. There should be resistance like a shock absorber. If not a new one is required.
