Recently my ML350 (164) went into Mercedes for an airbag recall. When it was in I asked them to have a look at why the tail gate wasn't opening and a slight shudder when the car was driving.
The tailgate not opening was due to the electrics being flooded and not operating the hydraulic pump, cost for this repair was going to be £2000. I was told the shudder was from some torque part, I cant remember the correct name. Apparently the job of this part is to smooth out the drive of the car, similar to a clutch when changing gear. I couldn't get a price for this repair as it would take further investigation.
My question is can anyone tell me, firstly the correct name, is it a big repair and roughly how much it would cost and any implications if it gats worse. If the tailgate motor cant be dried out and repaired I can get one off the internet, I have heard that it might have to be coded to the car or is it just plug and play?
Thanks in advance for any info.

First thing. Find and use a Mercedes independent garage for repairs (if you want to use MB themselves for servicing). I do hate how MB pull these astronomical figures out of the sky.

I think you are referring to a torque convertor.

i dont see why the pump needs coding to the car. I would assume its the same pump on all same cars to serve one purpose - open tailgate.

Thanks for getting back. I asked if it was a torque converter but the guy at Mercedes said it wasn't. He mentioned something else, I just cant remember the name. I`ll get a pump off the internet if I cant repair the one that's fitted and take a chance its not coded, I`ve nothing to lose!
I live in Edinburgh but cant find an independent Mercedes specialist nearby. I thought there was one but as it turned out they had worked on a few ML`s
Thanks for the info

Ask the guy the part name and post name and post back. We may be able to help or offer some direction.

I will contact Mercedes and ask. The way the guy described the part was that it smoothed out the drive of the car, it does not shudder when accelerating only at a constant speed. If it was a petrol engine you would say it was not firing, its more annoying than anything else.
