These bars are hardened and tempered, they could bend but usually break, so only the bushes, any idea why he said that it needs replacing

Have seen heavy wear in the bars before, worn the metal away where the bush sits, this could be what they are on about!

If it's like a W124, the action of the bush moving on the bar wears away the powder coating. The steel & broken-up coating then wears away the bushes when you it new ones. The quick fix is new bushes & replace them often

Interestingly a rubber bush or seal can wear a moving steel part quite significantly - you'd think it would be too soft to, but that's not the case

Its just like the old king pins and bushes where the bronze bush wore away the steel pin

Roll Bars etc.

Thanks Malcom, My Car S320CDI is 6 years old service on the dot etc. No bangs or accidents. I think, and know you are right Malcom, I felt I was being had over. At 68 I was hoping for trust in a large Service centre. Just found this site, (OK TOOK 68 YEARS!) Super and thanks to all who helped and replied. Wonderful Chaps and Girls. Bye

mr barry,
my w220 anti roll bar has the bushes bonded to it ...it's a one piece arrangement and a new front one was about £100. i changed it last week.

i was amazed too because the bushes look like 2 separate semi circles of material around the bar...but sure enough they are bonded on.

i've been chasing a knocking noise which turned out to be the ball joint attached to the drop link at the lower arm.

i think your service man was right

my dad has just changed the rear anti roll bar on his W124 and his 203 and it has sorted the rear end on both. they do wear out eventually as someone previously said. having said that, the 124 has 225k and the 203 has 180k so one could expect these sort of things to wear out. he'd been chasing a knock around the car for ages - tight as a drum now though!
