Dear All,

I thought I'd finally understood the idiosyncracies of how to measure my car's various fluids. She's a 2005 C220 CDI coupe (automatic). I was led to believe there's only the electronic (steering wheel controls) way of measuring the engine oil level because there's no engine oil dip stick or dip stick tube. I therefore assumed the blanked off tube B was where the gearbox oil level was measured, since this is just a bung and a dip stick needs to be obtained to measure the gearbox oil level.

After having bought all the necessary components to do a geabox oil change (except the homemade dip stick itself) (sealed for life - not convinced!) I noticed the red tamper plug I'd just bought to replace the factory black tamper plug didn't really appear to be anywhere near B. In fact I found it lurking at the back in position A.

My question is this.
Am I right in now thinking that B is where one could measure the engine oil mechanically? If so what's the part number for the dip stick? (I tried a friends dip stick from a 220cdi Vito and it suggested I had far too much oil in the engine - presumably a different length dip stick tube etc.)

I haven't done the gearbox oil change just yet. I didn't like the resistance down the dip stick tube to my homemade (net curtain wire) dip stick. There are some nasty bends in the tube. I think I might 'invest' in the MB dip stick.

A is autobox
B is engine oil

Your car being a 2005 may also be capible of giving an exact oil capacity left in the sump.

Engine should be hot & then left on level ground for 10 mins.
Put key in & turn to position 1 (before ignition)
Using steering wheel buttons, scroll through to display outside temperature
Press reset button on instrument cluster 3 times quickly
You should now have battery voltage display
If so, using up/down buttons on wheel, scroll through until one page reads "oil" at the bottom
Turn key one more position (ignition on)
Oil capacity should now be displayed (6.5 litres for a 220 diesel) check in you handbook though just in case I'm wrong.
