Now I know this isn't the sort of car you would expect to see s tow bar on but SWMBO seems to think she wants a caravan....

Looking around I can get towbars for just about anything but an X218 Shooting Brake AMG isn't out there.

A chap mentioned the other day that because AMG don't give a max tow value on the plate - then nobody will recommend a tow bar.

My question is: ignoring the legality - will a tow bar from a non- AMG CLS shooting brake fit...

Anyone?

I would imagine that if there is no rating plate on the car fitting a tow bar would invalidate your insurance

You could possibly get one to fit but as per above if there isn’t a load rating on the plate then you have no insurance

What you could do is buy a cheap W211 estate diesel?
Sure it’ll set you back around £2k for a decent ish one but you could fit a tow bar no issues to one, hugely practical and would be a lot better on fuel if you’re towing a caravan compared to you’re AMG!

Also you wouldn’t have to worry about accelerating the wear on the components on you’re AMG either, you would also have an another asset to sell if you decide to burn the caravan ;)

Obviously the downside would be if you had enough space

Funnily enough this actually is my plan 'B'. I do have the space. And the example you posted is actually a really good candidate

It could be any estate to be fair even a 5 series but I have a w211 E270 for just over 3 years and I’ve had no major issues with it apart from a couple roll bar links and upper ball joints.
you should get some decent MPG from it too even when towing a caravan
