One if the reasons I have not been down this road is the possible. unintended side effects of any such programming. And arguments over any liability. Of the same if I do go down the tow anything big road,I will be fitting my own discreet trans oil temp guage so I can see the before after effects of towing any real weight should it become apparent that there is going to be an issue ii will get something mire capable.
For motor insurance issues, the broker tells me that everything is ok,once I have the correct driving license, and keep within the specified weight limits. I used a bypass last time, so no programming needed. But I think that if you are using a dedicated MB plug and play set up then you should be ok, once it has been activated into the canbus as it's designed to handle it. The trans cooling system is a problem though as you point out. But in my case, the actual towing will be light, and on level roads.

The potential complications of towing with an AT, actually adds significantly to the argument to tow with a vehicle with a manual gearbox doesn't it?

Today yes. May be all makers but benz have just turned the exercise onto another consummer event and one guys of my age would never have expected, given 30 odd yr of buying cars to tow. Ie criteria
does it have a decent sized preferably diesel motor and carry a little weight.

I've fitted the towbar to the 2014 E class w212....physically, no problem,,,its exactly the same process as in the 2010. But ( there's always a BUT) the relay system I used in the 2010, wont work in the 2014 version. Has to be a dedicated harness, which will need activation via MB main dealership. So if I could ask you how you managed to install it on your's without this trip to the MB Dealership ajlsl600?
Thanks

I have just got my instructions out.see attch but apart from remembering it came from germany I cant remember much more its all cabus connected but not activated I will look on my laptop ,when its charged IMG_20201102_151527.jpg .the bar came from umbra rimorcho complete with bypass relay ,wiring ,socket the whole lot was about 166 delivered the dedicated harness near 100 euro ,I have crap memory. But about that if I discover more info I will post it

Well I think I am at near 260 with my self install so if,and I wont I went to benz for coding I would likely be near 400 so likely saved 185£ one day there will be an easy way apparently there is a code to key in on star ?? But I dont know if thats it or not.

Not all AMG line cars were type approved for towing so double check your weight plate on the b pillar and that it’s actually stated there

My days of crawling under cars have long gone so glad to pay someone else to do it.
