Depends! Coding takes care of the parking sensors and stop-start, if fitted. It also optimises gear changes for caravan towing. If you are only towing a small trailer or even fitting a bike rack, you can make a choice of coding or not. MB will charge upwards of £100; a towbar specialist somewhat less.

I would suggest you've been misinformed, the posts at 2 and 3 are nearer the mark! and if you propose to do any serious touring while towing, you may even need the cooling upgraded for your ATF!

Just for the record....
A factory-fitted MB towbar comes complete with additional cooling for any serious touring at a bargain price of around £750 depending on model. If you can get an MB dealer to do a retro-fit, it will cost upwards of £2000 as the hardware for these mods are included in the kit, so I understand and add to the labour costs. Aftermarket kits don't generally include mods to the cooling system, but can be coded to the car specifically.

I had a Tow Trust kit fitted to my car and its been fine...touch wood!
