My wife has an SLK, but I've never seen or heard of a towbar for such a car.
Would look weird don't you think?
I've never seen one for my TVR either; must ask the dealer next time I go in
the vehicles are not designed to have one and has not been type rated to do so. so it's out of the question. sorry.
plus the R170 99SLK is a c class chassis with part of the back end chopped off so there isnt any fixing place suitble for the tow fittings. whether the latest one has an area you could fix it to i cant tell by looking, but its irrelevent
not sure about the actual practice of putting one on an SL but the vehicle has not been type rated for it so it would be illegal.
not as sad as leaving one's convertible in the garage all summer whilst one tows a caravan with a tin top. ( or worst still a 4X4 ) Plus it makes for a pretty rapid caravan that doesn't hold up all the jealous working car drivers who wish they were on holiday.
Sad or not, the speed limit is still 60MPH while towing, and no outside lane on 2+ lanes motorways. This leaving you with the lorries and the OAP brigade.
As for the rapid bit, how fast can you go before you get flipped over by a gust of wind?
Use your car for what it's for: cruising and making good progress.
I'm sure you dont need a caravan to impress jealous working people.
I can't remember seeing the towing capacity of the SL500 in the sales brochure.
Maybe it's a give away as for the use of this type of vehicule
I think your missing the point - you tow with your SL - then while you are on your holidays you have your car to use sans caravan - top down winding country lanes. Alternative is leave it in the garage all summer - go on hols in your tintop. Incidently rapid does not mean top speed just that it performs better than most non-towing cars and doesn't annoy self important non-caravaners by holding them up. ( a constant lame whinge from those who don't own caravans ) - MB make/offer/fit a towbar kit. Incidently, I haven't noticed that every driver in the inside/middle lanes are OAPs or lorries - you may like to read the highway code that asks you to use the middle/inside lane when not overtaking or would that turn you into an OAP?. So you think that the outside lane is for young people only? I have often dared to drive my Lotus Esprit Turbo in the outside lane and I am over 60.
The MB detachable tow hitch for the 1999 SL is very neat, add that to the decent sized boot and it just shows a few of the advantages over the toy Mercs.
