Towbar wiring on ML

Hi,
I intend to fit a towbar on my 2002 ML, the car is pre-wired for single electrics (there is a pre-wired plug near to the fuel filler) but i have been given conflicting information as to whether or not i need to fit a 7 way relay.....my question is, does a relay need to be fitted or can i wire the plug directly to the 7 pin trailer socket?

Thanks

I hope to fit my towbar and wiring this week. Ive looked at getting the wiring loom from the dealer, but it is at a ridiculous price. As far as I am aware, the towbar wiring just plugs into the connector near the fuel filler. It is very easy to make up since it is a standard iso connector, (available from car stereo suppliers) and you dont need any relays etc. I'll let you know how straightforward it is once I've done it.

Fitted the towbar today.....very easy!....the wiring connector near to the fuel filler is easiest accessed by removing the nearside vent located behind the bumper, it just pulls off (after removing the bumper to fit the towbar)...i cut the wires off the existing iso connector and scotchlocked them directly to the trailer wire.

The connections would have been better soldered as scotchlocks tend to end up with bad connections.

I agree, but, i have previously used scotchlocks without any problems on previous towbar installs and as these particular connections are within the vehicle and not subject to the elements i am happy to put my trust in them. :)

You're right! Its simple to fit, but I used and ISO connector. I crimped the terminals onto the wire from the towbar socket and made up the connector. Then simply plug in and you get a professional finish - just as good as original without cutting any wires. I've always been very wary of cutting any wiring in the car since it don't take much for dealers/manufactures to wriggle out of genuine warranty claims by pointing the finger at modifications carried out by the owner.

2002 ML270 Trailer wiring

Hi all, just wondering if the ML comes pre-wired as standard for trailer socket or do I need a 7 way relay kit. My ML has park sensors at rear and I wonder if they will need adjusting to cope with the hitch?

Reading the discussion here, it seems that at least some MLs have a socket near the fuel filler. Is this easily spotted and does anyone have the wiring diagram for it?

I bought a Bosal hitch which seems decent enough, but now I am wondering if I should instead have stumped up for the genuine MB unit due to the sensors.

Regards,

DM

Hi BIIGBADBAL
Thanks for theinput it has helped me. Not sure if you had the same problem as me I have found the iso connector on the car however my wiring kit does not have an ISP on the end just the wires. Furthermore the towbar wiring has 7 cables and the ISO on the car has many more?? I now it said a standard ISO will do it but where exactly can I get one of these and then secondly which cables go with which??
Sorry if I sound blond but please help can't wait to get my boat on the water and enjoy this "wonderful" summer lol
