I am toying with the idea of putting a towbar on my E220 Coupe.

My man says that a bumper cut is needed.

Rummaging on the web, Bosal seems to do a demountable job which needs a bumper cut and a normal one which doesn't.

Another firm TowbarsRus.com is offering a deal, but only shows a mobile number.

Anybody have any advice or knowlege of the subject.

I don't want to lug things, I have an L200 for that, but I don't want to have to trundle up to Scotland in it just to move my boarding dinghy for my boat. and I am averse to agricultural appendages.

Don't know much about your car but thought I would just sing TowbarsRUs' praise.

I have today, just fitted one of their towbars to my E220 Estate.

I only ordered it Yesterday! - what service.

Instructions were clear and easy and the towbar came with electrics, towball, all bolts and even a towball cover all included, with free delivery!

Good luch with your coupe.

Did you have to cut the bumper?

Did you fit the demountable or fixed unit?

George,

I did not have to cut my bumper. The cross piece fitted behind it without having to take it off and the towbar came underneath it.

The rest of the towbar went forward below the exhaust and fuel tank, and mounted on the body crossmember behind the differential.

I opted (£99 cheaper) to have a non-demountable unit. This is fitted with the 'traditional' flange mounted towball which is mounted using 2 bolts.

Remember - this is an estate. I think there is a law somewhere that states that "All estate cars must be fitted with a towbar" - only kidding!!!

Cheers.

Thanks for the pic. It looks a neat job. I'll go and roll about on the garage floor tomorrow to see where the bits go on mine.

George.

PS I was in the filling station slaking the L200's thirst when I noticed a slight movement. A chap had run into the Mitsubishi's agrigultural towball/fork pin unit which wasn't at all purturbed. His numberplate and front bumper were seriously modified. Perhaps the fixed unit will have its merits.

I have a towbar fitted on my W124 coupe - it is of the fixed variety, and no trimming of the bumper was required. It was fitted for me by a towbar specialist Solent Towbars in Fareham Hampshire.

I assume an E220 is not too dissimalar, so you should be able to find something suitable.

cheers,

Nik

Thanks guys.
I did send an e-mail enquiry to TowbarsRUS but got referred to one listed for the latest coupe.
My son recommends Witter and my local factors supply Bosal.
I came up to bonnie Scotland in the old Volvo with the towbar to move the boarding dinghy back to the garage here for the winter, so I'll get on the case again when I get back south of the border.
What type numbers did you fit?
Just sitting here listening to the liquid scottish sunshine on the windows!!!

Just to muddy the waters here - our W124 E320 has the OEM tow bar fitted as manufactured by Oris. This is demountable (and we now have the goose necksection thanks to a forum member) and has no cut in the bumper.
