Towing with a GLE 250

Who tows a large twin axle caravan with a GLE 250 ? How does it fair ? enough power ? Stable ?

Based on no knowledge or experience of towing , I think I’d want a 350

I tow the largest/heaviest single axle available from Sterling, a Continental 570, with a GLE350 AMG Line without the badges in order to not be pilloried by the badge police . EmilysDad tows a slightly lighter twin axle Coachman with a ML350.

The 3litre V6 diseasel is the better tool for the job.

Having towed with a W221 S350 and Discovery 4, the 2 MBs tow far better stability wise than the Disco. All are on air suspension that the GLE250 may not be.

I understand twin axles tow with more stability due to having 2 axles apparently. Pita to manoeuvre on sites, so a pair of motor movers are well worth fitting, but they break into a rather paultry payload on modern thrown together heaps of poor quality common parts masquerading as caravans from the UK circuses pretending to be manufacturers. Thats a whole new forum section in itself, buyer beware and get from a dealer near to home to rebuild them regularly

Other tuggers on here use the 3litre V6 diseasel in other MB models such as R class and E class estates.

In all the time we've been towing I use the tugs daily, MrsP had a Fiat 500C and now a Qasquai with the lawn mower engine in for daily short journeys to/fro work. We tend to keep the 'town' car for 8 years on average so works out relatively cheap motoring.

That's what I'd be looking at, get a small shopping trolley for commuting and something decent for towing

I wonder if the GLE will probably tow better than an estate like ours thanks to shorter overhang at the rear? On the flip side, the estate is more aerodynamic so will have a better fuel consumption when not towing. 350 all the time!

Suspension makes a huge difference, discos weren’t great as they had so much travel they wallowed around a lot. Air suspension on the rear makes a big difference. The tin snail mags regularly test tow cars, there’ll no doubt be a review of the cars mentioned in this thread somewhere in their archives.

.... previous R Class & this ML both with Airmatic gave a good and obviously level ride.

The GLE we are considering has the off road package in conjunction with air suspension.
