E class 270d.
Hi hope your all well in the mad world.
I have a 56 plate E270 and love it.
I know its a big old slug and not full of power. But it just keeps running .
The auto box has no real kick down if a quick acleration is needed. I have to manual drive it at times . (According to owners manual this is correct).
I'm considering fitting a tow bar and pulling my caravan ( because all the holidays have gone tits up ) I know it has the power to pull .
Has anyone else towed with a auto E270d. Thanks ! Steve

2003 ML270 sold but not forgotten. 2022 Kia EV6 RWD LR
An ML270 makes a very adequate tow vehicle and it would be heavier than an E class so see no reason why it wouldn't cope, depending on tow capacity versus weight of van.

He’s got an E not an ML

What is the length / weight of the Caravan?

Whilst the ML is the better towcar for something 2000kg and above, most caravans are below that.

The kick down thing tho - now that’s wrong. I had a clk270 (same engine / gbox ) and that kicked down fine - are you sure you are pressing the kick down switch properly / at all?

Not quite the same drive train in the 211 compared the the 209, all electronic vs vacuum but also improvements in the injectors and cooling.

the not changing to kick down is certainly not right though, my 270 would do it very happily if needed unless I had limp mode which it then became a dog to drive properly

No - my Dad never got on with autos because he was super delicate with all controls, so never pushed hard enough to get kick down - I had to keep showing him that when he thought he had hit full throttle, he needed to push harder to get kick down.

I've still got a 270 clk kick down quite good on that too and she has 170k on clock . Kicked down hard other day when tdi Passat with big exhaust tried to come up inside .( wife thought I was childish as I'm 68) and no problem beating it lol.

According to the owners manual.
Does not have a kick down . I find that peculiar. Even in sports mode ?
Even if I floor it ?
It's a 56 plate E270 auto .

No, totally wrong. Where does it say that in the manual?

There may not be a physical switch on that model, it may just be software, but it will kickdown, all autos do

I think you need to post in “engine gearbox” section -“E270 won’t kickdown” get some tips and ideas.

When was the gearbox last fluid change?

It will do over 100mph no problem. Max rpm on The dash is 5k . I'll look into it ? Thank you for the advise

Doing over 100mph is no indication as to whether kickdown is working though, essentially, if you use full throttle below about 3000 rpm, and it's possible with regard to ratio's, the gearbox should kick down, one or two ratios, the car should rev more and have decent acceleration - if it doesn't there is a fault for sure.

I had a CLK270CDI 15 years ago. I remember I had to almost floor the accelerator to get the kick down to work.

Not almost, you do have to floor it, there is a switch at the bottom of the accelerator travel
