Anyone used the TPMS valves sold on eBay.
Anyone purchased and fitted and got them working on their SL 350 1969 .
What did you use to program them.
I'm sure as time goes on many members could benefit from these low cost alternatives

There was a member here who used them on his A Class coupe, he reported excellent performance. The valves linked to an app on his phone. I was going to have them fitted to my 215 but never got around d to it; from memory they were £70-80 for the pack of four.

As far as I know, my 2009 SL350 uses sensors to determine the outer diameter of the tyre wall. The diameter is monitored to ensure no loss of pressure. With that in mind there is nothing for the TPMS valves to connect to and share the data with.
However, I think there were "options" for TPMS vs the monitoring I have.

I might be wrong though. This system is something I have not come across before.

I had them on my 2006 Cayman S as it did not have TPMS, but the ultra low profile tyres made visual assessment of tyre pressure impossible. Even a flat tyre gave the visual impression of being OK.

The system worked well and the display gave a clear indication of pressures and temperature - interesting to observe how pressure increased with temperature.

I left them on when I sold the car, but fitted another set to my 2005 CLK last year (also pre-standard fitment of TPMS).

Not so impressed this time. Don't know if it was the quality of the valve stems being poor, but the sensors would not screw on more than one thread or so, and did not have a very secure feel and the valve threads were easily stripped - sensors would not tighten up properly. Have ended up leaving them off now, but would certainly re-consider if I could find a better quality brand.

They are, however, rather unsightly as they are effectively an over-sized valve dust cap.

This is via the wheel speed sensor; TPMS fitted at factory uses special valves that talk to the car.

I am thinking of changing from OE 17" 5 twin-spoke wheels to extra cost option OE 18" 5-spoke wheels and assume that my 2011 R230 SL350 has tyre pressure monitoring.

The wheels I am thinking of purchasing will need refurbed and would come with the current tyres still on - I will be replacing the tyres (more expense!).

I am assuming the prospective purchased wheels with tyres would be fitted with TPMS type valves.

Will I need to purchase new valves, can the existing valves in the wheels be reprogrammed or will the my car's TPMS work with the new wheel TPMS valve combination without reprogramming?

Any advice appreciated.

All depends on which version of TPMS you have on your car, direct or indirect

So, a bit more research clarifies the direct/ indirect issue.

Option code 477 is Tyre Pressure Loss Warner (TPLS). This is the "indirect" system and works using the ABS sensors for each wheel to identify a change/ difference in wheel revolutions caused by the change in circumference arising from a loss of pressure. This is characterised by a yellow tyre pressure warning lamp being illuminated in the dash display. There are no individual wheel sensors for this system and the standard rubber valve stems are used.

Option code 475 is Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). This is the "direct" system and works using individual pressure sensors which are part of the valve assembly in each wheel. There will be a dash display showing pressures for each of the four wheels individually. The individual sensors are not inexpensive!

Happy to say that I have now established that I have TPLS, so have saved around £100 per corner for a change of wheels.
