Evening guys I'm looking at a set of replacement wheels off ebay (mine are quite scabby so it's either refurb or replace) but I'm a bit concerned replacement the tpms sensors! The guy said the wheels have them fitted but obviously they won't be coded to the car!
Is it possible to diy pair them with the car or does it need to be professionally programed?
What will happen if I don't code them? Ie constant tire pressure warnings or will it just go dormant and not do anything?
Its a 2009 c220 if it makes any difference

You may need them coded to the car model, but once they're talking the car will learn where they are as you drive.
Fit them and see.
If after the relearn period you're still not getting any tyre pressures registered then you may need to get them coded to the car.
Note that pressure sensor batteries have a finite life expectancy - say 5 years. A lot of tyre places handle them now as some form of tyre pressure monitoring became a legal requirement around 2012.
Seeing as your car is a 2009 model it may be worth checking whether you have active or passive pressure monitoring. If you have an active system then you'll be able to read tyre pressures from a screen on the instrument panel for each wheel. If passive then it won't state what your pressures are.
If you have the passive system, which works on comparing speed of rotation, then you can ditch the tpms sensors.

It doesn't display the pressure just puts a warning up if the pressure is low!
Don't know what type in the new wheels as there from a later model!

I am sure yours are not active from 2009. They are not active on my 2011 212.
I bought a second hand set of MB wheels with TPMS for our SLC 2016 vintage. I fitted them & they worked. No coding needed.

Remember that TPMS sensors have a limited life…. Around 8-10 years.
after that the internal battery dies, and you get TP errors.
(can’t replace the batteries)

if you don’t know how old they are, they could die next week, you need tyres dismounted to fit new sensors. So give it a try, hopefully they are ok, but remember they will fail at some point.

We’ve already established that OP has a 2009 car which will not have active TPMS sensors. The tyre pressure loss warning system will just work on the ABS wheel speed sensors to detect a tyre with lower pressure than expected.

I have my own TPMS on the Defender. Tyres look inflated, you're good to go. If they look a bit flat, put some air in. Simples.

Let air out and go off road… ;)
Mine vary from ~13psi to ~35 depending upon location and conditions under paw
