TPMS valves...

I'm about to get some new tyres and am wondering whether anything needs to be done to the tpms valves at the same time.

Presumably they are fitted with batteries of some kind - how often should these be changed?
What sort of cost is involved and is it something to trust the local tyre centre to do, or is the dealer best?

I doubt they will replace the batteries, i think they are sealed devices (pretty small on my car from memory), however there are videos on youtube showing how to replace the batteries, but again, they are sealed devices which are manually opened and not Mercedes specific

Yes, that was 'interesting'. He might have managed breaking the bead with pieces of wood on those high sidewall tyres, but I wouldn't fancy his chances with my 235/45 section tyres and certainly not with some really low profile tyres.

But once a tpms unit is replaced, it will need coding to the car so that the car will know which wheel it is. Is it possible to do this without using a Mercedes dealer?

Really? How does the car know which wheel is which? If I were to swap my rear wheels to the front, how would the tyre pressures then show up on the display? Are the sensors all the same or are they already coded to be mounted to specific positions - front, rear, left, right?

go ahead and swap them around, I don't know how 'they' figure it out but they do, if you add more air to one tire after swapping them around and check before/after you can confirm that it's indeed registering the change on the correct tire.

I've never had to reset my TPMS, i think it auto resets itself... for example when i swap from winter to summer wheels all of which have tpms, the tpms readings on Comand update accordingly.
