A very rough outline, it brakes the spinning wheel and applies more power to the other wheel.or keeps both drive wheels at the same speed

How does traction control works?

Traction control normally prevents too much power from being transmitted to the driven wheels. It typically uses the ABS sensors to spot one of the driven wheels rotating unnecessarily faster than the other and cuts the power of the engine until sanity is restored.

If you mean maintaining drive across the driven axle then that is normally know as a limited slip differential. MB normally use a plate lsd, which uses clutch plates to maintain drive between the driven wheels of an axle. If the car is cornered the clutch plates slip because the wheels are travelling a different distance (inside and outside the cornering circle) and locking them would cause the car to skitter around the corner. If one wheel then loses traction there is no slip between the wheels and effectively all the power goes to the wheel with the traction.
In a worn lsd of this type the differential gradually loses its locking action until it acts as a normal open diff.
There are different types of lsd and all have different characteristics. Some specialist such as Quaife Engineering can supply lsd's where its not a manf. option.
Fitting an lsd is not cheap as those in scrap cars are usually worn out and new ones are ~£1000 plus some specialist fitting. I wouldn't trust it to an MB fitter as it requires engineering understanding to set up.

I don't believe traction was available on the 190. I believe it wasn't really developed until the early 90's and I don't remember any mention of it on any car in the 80s. It was an expensive option on my '95 C class and pretty rare there too as a result. The one I had simply braked the spinning back wheel. It didn't even cut the throttle so the effect was very odd and only partially effective.
Newer models have ESP which is considerably more complex, including braking opposing wheels in a skid, cutting engine power and ties into other acronyms such as ABS, BAS, SBC etc. All rather complicated but of no real concern if you have a 190.

I know mid 80's Saabs had traction control (called TCS) which was sometimes troublesome, so it was dropped.

Had a modified one with no TCS. 270bhp through the front wheels anyone?

Almost certainly try changing your driving style (your thread reply style gives a big clue as to your age ...) to get MPG down.

Mine is way more frugal.

Even my 2.6 was more economical than that - I'd suggest something is wrong....

Having said that, if you're doing really short journeys in the winter, that's probably about all you will get.
