Apologies for asking a question that has possibly been asked many times before - Why is there such a difference in fluid level between hot and cold?

Two things here, 1, this fluid can foam when running, and this will give an artificial reading. 2, The fluid also expands with heat.

The term Hot or Cold is really a simple way of saying, "let it stand for a while" before a reading is taken, when say the engine has been off for a couple of hours and its still warm, and then you look at the dip stick, if its a touch up,you know that is normal.
