Transmission noise then Warning Light??

I have a strange rubbing/clicking noise (at times it seems to sound like radio interference – Yes, radio is switched off) that appears when the car is moving and varies in volume as I increase in speed and reduces when I turn to the left. It appears to be coming from the transmission area and only appears when the car is moving. The Engine Management Warning Light has now just illuminated (one day after the aforementioned noise was detected) however, the general running of the car appears fine and fuel consumption is normal. Any suggestions? – are the two connected?
